Joseph Sakran
Class of 2019
As a survivor of gun violence and now trauma surgeon, Joseph Sakran is dedicated to giving others the same second chance he received. Joe’s unique background and training has allowed him to work on addressing the challenges that exist in healthcare functioning at the nexus of medicine, public health, and public policy.
During PLS, Sakran tapped into his personal experience, clinical training, and relationships developed over time to work on creating a tool kit that will empower clinicians to speak with patients about safe storage of firearms. The important clinician-patient relationship provides a critical avenue to help disseminate this central message related to safe storage and responsible gun ownership.
